Hopefully by now you are aware of a new regulation that is being enforced as part of UK legislation relating to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), effective from on 25th May 2018.
What is GDPR?
GDPR is basically additional rules and regulations around how businesses collect, use, and share data from their customers. This is based on the existing Data Protection Policies that businesses already have in place, but they’re far more detrimental if a data breach occurs. A business can be fined either 4% of its annual group turnover or up to €20 million, depending on the severity of the data breach. The purpose of the GDPR is to provide a set of standardised data protection laws across all the member countries. This should make it easier for EU citizens to understand how their data is being used, and also raise any complaints, even if they are not in the country where its located.
What does GDPR apply to?
Under GDPR regulations, the definition of Personal Data is information that can be used to identify a living person, whether it’s by name or even a unique identifier that links back to a person.
